The 4 free classic templates

The fan

Your ancestors open in a half-circle around you, generation after generation. It fits well on one sheet and reads at a glance. From 4 to 10 generations.

The horizontal

Generations read from left to right, like a frieze. Handy for a large format to hang on the wall. From 4 to 10 generations.

The symmetrical

You in the center, your father’s family on one side and your mother’s on the other. It shows both sides of the family right away. From 4 to 10 generations.

The circle

Your ancestors form rings around you. It is the most decorative shape. From 4 to 10 generations.

Is it really free?

Yes, the four templates on this page are free. The free PDF includes a small “Avant Nous” logo.

How many generations should I choose?

Each generation doubles the number of boxes. You count first, then your parents, your grandparents, and so on.

  • 4 generations: 15 people, up to great-grandparents.
  • 5 generations: 31 people.
  • 6 generations: 63 people.
  • 8 generations: 255 people.
  • 10 generations: 1,023 people.

For a first tree, 5 or 6 generations are more than enough. The more generations there are, the larger the paper size must be to stay legible.

How do I print my tree well?
  • Choose a scale of 100%, without “Fit to page”.
  • For a large number of generations, have it printed in large format at a print shop: the PDF is made for it.
Can I use a GEDCOM file?

Yes. If you already have a GEDCOM file (exported from software or a genealogy website), you can import it. It is not required: you can also enter the names by hand on screen.

What is the difference with the illustrated templates?

Avant Nous also offers illustrated templates, drawn by hand, for example the Tilleul. They are paid and have no logo. The four templates on this page remain free.

How do I know what to put in the boxes?

Start with yourself, your parents and your grandparents. Note the name, and the date and place of birth, marriage and death. To go further, read our guide to tracing your family back through the archives.
